At the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for Climate Conference, held January 14-15, and co-organized by The Nature Conservancy and Civic Exchange, Stephen Suen, Director of Landscape Architecture and Nature-based Solutions Lead, Urbanism + Planning, AECOM HK; presented “Valuing Nature-based Solutions and Natural Capital.”

“Conservation should not be seen as an expense but as an opportunity to transform natural capital into a financial asset,” Stephen said as he shared the framework for the Natural Capital Initiative, using a project in Indonesia as an example. By valuing air, water, soil, biodiversity, and carbon, corporations can embrace ecosystem restoration as part of their sustainable growth strategy, creating win-win-win solutions for banks, businesses, and the environment.

This advocacy for green financing aligns with “Design Principles for High-Performance Ecosystems,” a publication Stephen co-authored. It outlines strategies to design ecosystems that maximize environmental benefits by enhancing biodiversity, resilience, and connections between built and natural environments.
