At Napital, we are delighted to see the Hong Kong Government taking aproactive lead in recognising the vital role of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) through its newly released Hong Kong Nature-based Solutions Design Guidelines (HKNbSDG). By adapting established global NbS principles—such as those from the IUCN Global Standard—to our unique local context, these guidelines offer a practical and robust framework. They effectively bridge the demands of urban development with the imperatives of ecological restoration, providing clear direction for industries to adopt more sustainable practices.

We take particular pride in Napital's contributions to thisinitiative, achieved through our longstanding partnership with AECOM in the Natural Capital Initiative and the development of the Natural Capital Index. This collaboration has been instrumental in shaping the guidelines' methodological framework, including its emphasis on five key performance indicators (KPIs). Drawing on our joint expertise, we have helped translate innovative concepts into actionable strategies that can be applied across Hong Kong's diverse landscapes.
What distinguishes the HKNbSDG is its strong commitment toevidence-based implementation. This includes establishing clear baselines at the outset, conducting ongoing monitoring to support adaptive management, and collating data throughout the project lifecycle to refine and promote best practices. At the core are the five measurable KPIs—biodiversity, carbon, water, air, and soil—each underpinned by practical assessment methods designed to deliver verifiable, real-world impacts. These align closely with the guidelines' three core principles: promoting ecosystem diversity at multiple scales, embracing human-nature coexistence for mutual benefits, and improving resilience through NbS.

This approach resonates deeply with Napital's own Natural CapitalInitiative, a scientifically driven strategy that integrates conservation, environmental engineering, and business incentives to restore ecosystems and
enhance their services. Through this initiative, we pioneer methodologies that map the holistic profile of natural capital, transforming it into a tangible financial asset while supporting biodiversity preservation and sustainable land value enhancement. Our track record, including the successful pilot project on Bintan Island in Indonesia and our collaborative work on the Natural Capital Manifesto, demonstrates how these methods can fundamentally reshape the design and delivery of NbS projects.
As a leading provider and collaborator in NbS and ESG solutions,Napital offers an integrated suite of capabilities tailored to these needs. We deliver comprehensive evaluation frameworks centred on our five core KPIs: biodiversity units (measuring life form variety and resilience), soil index (tracking organic matter and microbial diversity), water index (reducing suspended solids and managing runoff), air index (quantifying pollutant removal like PM2.5), and carbon sequestration (assessing storage capacity). Our
evidence-based performance tracking employs contemporary nature tech, including camera traps, bioacoustics, and environmental DNA (eDNA) for scalable data collection. We provide interactive digital dashboards for real-time visualisation, stakeholder engagement, transparency, and public education,
alongside AI-driven monitoring tools for precise insights and blockchain integration for reliable data assurance. These services enable stakeholders across Hong Kong and Southeast Asia to achieve measurable environmental gains, ensure ESG compliance, and explore investment avenues—whether through ecosystem restoration, impact investments, branding partnerships, or customer engagement initiatives aligned with sustainability goals.
It is especially encouraging to see the HKNbSDG being applied inflagship projects such as the Northern Metropolis San Tin Technopole. The dedicated leaflet for this development highlights how NbS principles are being integrated into planning, from wetland conservation and river revitalisation to enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience in a high-density urban setting. This validates the path we have been advocating and opens doors for further innovation.
We view the HKNbSDG as an invitation to collaborate and pushboundaries in natural capital advancement. Napital is eager to partner with organisations, developers, and policymakers to explore these opportunities and drive sustainable progress.
